Asians Behaving Badly: Austin Powers Henchman Sentenced To Life In Prison

If Joseph Hyungmin Son looks familiar, it’s because you’ve seen him throw a shoe on the big screen. Best known as Random Task on Austin Powers (yeah, baby), Son will now be taking on a new role behind bars for life.

He’s another Asian Behaving Badly in a disturbing case of kidnapping, torture and rape back in 1990.

According to prosecutors, a woman walking back to her apartment alone with her dog after going to look at Christmas lights with a relative and friend was stopped by Son about 12:30 a.m. on Christmas Eve 1990. Son asked her for directions and then with another man dragged her to their car, threw her in the back and drove away.

Son and the other man told her they were driving to Compton, pistol-whipped her and repeatedly threatened to kill her. Prosecutors said Son then repeatedly raped, sodomized and forced the victim to orally copulate him in the back of the car. He also tortured her with a firearm.

Um, WTF? Normally, I’d crack a joke about Dr. Evil, shagging, and the fall of Mike Myers as a comedic actor but this case sounds so disturbing that I don’t even want to go near it. I can’t even imagine how traumatized the poor victim must be after being kidnapped.

It looks like Son’s acting career ended with Austin Powers. Now, almost 15 year later, he’s been convicted for felony torture a couple weeks ago and will spend the rest of his life in prison without the option for parole. Good riddance.

Who throws a shoe? Honestly!

About Moye

I am a Japanese-American girl who was born, raised and is most probably stuck in traffic right this second in Los Angeles. I'm currently one of the co-editors of 8Asians and like to distract myself with good food, reading long books, playing video games, catching up on celebrity news, choosing my new new haircut and then writing all about it on Hello Moye and sometimes here on Twitter if I can get it in under 140 words or less.
