Out of curiosity, what ethnicity is Carmen Wong Ulrich?
From what I can tell, the pretty television and online journalist is likely of Latin America descent due to some of the publications that she contributes to such as Latina, and The LatinConnect. But where exactly does the “Wong” come from? Nothing I can find on this CNBC host of “On the Money” seems to say anything about her personal life. And since I watch CNBC all the time, I can’t help but wonder what’s up with the Wong?
So I ask you readers… Where in the world is Carmen Wong Ulrich (from)?

Maybe so. But I also thought it was customary to drop back to maiden name after divorce? Maybe those customs don’t apply anymore.

Well seeing that Latin America consists of many races and ethnicities, she could be mixed with several ethnicities. From the various Native American ancestry, to European ancestry, to African ancestry, and yes even Asian ancestry…because there are in fact Chino-Latinos. T
Names don’t always tell the whole story either. She could of received that name through marriage, adoption, or whatever reasons not necessarily relating to her actual ethnic background. It be like a case of Filipinos having Spanish last names, and contrary to popular belief not all Filipinos are part Spanish just because they have Spanish last names.
A quick Wikipedia search will even tell you this about the Dominican Republic:
“The ethnic composition of the Dominican population is 73% mixed race, 16% White and 11% Black. The mixed population is a racial mixture of black, white, and to an extent, Taíno heritage. The country’s population includes a large Haitian minority. A smaller, yet significant presence of East Asians (primarily ethnic Chinese and Japanese) can be found throughout the population. Other ethnic groups in the country include Middle Easterners — primarily Lebanese, Syrians and Palestinians — Spaniards, Germans, Italians, Portuguese, Irish, Corsicans, French, and Americans.”
What’s even more ironic, Wong shows Chinese origin…Ulrich is a German name…so I guess the only thing Spanish would be her first name, Carmen.

Signs to point to Ernie’s explanation.
However, if we are going to base her ethnicity on last names. Based on her father’s last name, one of Carmen’s ethnic background is Italian.

Since I’m assuming it’s refering to last names and Latin Americans, it is really going to be hard to tell since surnames are carried on by the father, the mothers role isn’t clearly defined. Some ethnic groups defined their members by maternal descent, although most probably take on the father.

Her first name is Spanish, her first last name is Chinese, her second last name is German, and her hair looks African. I am so confused right now. She must be a mix of everything.

I am watching On the Money right now and I too was wondering what ethnicity she was. I don’t see any “wong” in her. Perhaps she was adopted by some Chinese guy?

every once in a while someone comes along that is so naturally talented and unforgetably attractive, that they seem to defy all possibility. That someone is none other than Carmen. With comments ranging from “I’m going back to school”, to ” thats my favorite show”, to “now I’ve learned what beauty is” it comes as no surprise to me the sucsess that she has aquired. For me personally, she represents the flagship of beauty, brains, personallity, and humor. For any person having aced even one of theese, is remarkable, but for Carmen, they all seem standard. As for her nationallity, I personally am inclined to believe that she ia a mix of Italian, hispanic, and oreintal. Her nose appears italian, her skin could be italian or hispanic, her hair could be italian, hispanic, or oriental, her figure seems a little more hispanic than oreintal.Although she doesn’t appear to have any dominate oreintal genes, the inside corners of her eyes [close up] you can see the slight oriental influence. Also, her fingernails have oriental characteristics. In a close up view of her fingernails, [not painted] you can tell that the side edges widen in a slight curve about half way down; A charactoristic found consistantly in oriental individuals. Although these are just my opinions, I have had a fair amount of experience in ethnic origin. While these are opinions based on apperance alone, we would know for sure if we knew of her fathers last name, as well as her mothers maiden name.If anyone could submit that info, then we would be all set.I love Carmen. She makes them all look like roughdrafts……………… [the number 1 fan]

However, I found out that she is Dominican-American.Officially.The question would be what if they were japaneese or from thiland and you called them ‘Asian’ would not they get offended,or does it not work that way?By the way Katie, did you have any info to add, or did you just forget the topic?

From my observation of her look and mannerism, especiallly in speaking and body language, she must be of Chinese(father) and Dominican(mother) mixed heritage.

She’s Dominican, mother was married to a Peter Wong and that’s why she has Wong as her maiden name. Don’t think Peter Wong was her real dad because she mentions in her bio that she found out who her real father was when she was 31, her real dad was probably Dominican because she has no inkling of Asian features.
