What Do White Supremacists Think of Asians?

restrooms What Do White Supremacists Think of Asians?

A Japanese American veteran of the Second World War told me a story that always stuck in my head. He said that while he was training in the South, he and his fellow Japanese American soldiers went into a restaurant to go to the bathroom. Of course, the bathrooms back then were segregated. Having grown up on the West Coast, he wasn’t sure which bathroom he was supposed to use. He eventually decided to go into the “colored” bathroom since he didn’t think of himself as “white.” But when he emerged from the bathroom an angry crowd had formed and he was informed that he was not “colored” and that in the future he was to use the “white” one instead.

The reason I’m telling you this story is that I’ve always been curious to see how racists saw Asian/Asian Americans. Unlike other people of color, it isn’t always black and white – excuse the pun.  Instead it’s very complicated.  Because unlike other racial minorities, many of the stereotypes associated with Asians  – hardworking, nerdy, quiet, demure – can be seen as “positive.” And because historically the percentages of Asian/Asian Americans have been low, it has been a non-issue. But as the number of Asian/Asian Americans increases in the coming decades and as the world becomes more and more global, I have a feeling that much of how racists see Asians will have to be re-evaluated.

Recently, I was lurking on a white supremacist forum (while researching a screenplay) when I saw this fascinating discussion: They were debating whether they should hate Asians or grudgingly respect us.

(Please note, I won’t link to the site because I don’t want to drive traffic there, but if you’re interested I’m sure you’d be able to find it all on your own).

The title of the thread is “White Vs. Asian.” In the first post, the person uses pictures (he found on the Internet) to compare “white” architecture, food, musicians, art, sculpture, “beauties,” ships, athletes, “average commoner,” and “medics” to their “Asian” equivalents. I’m not going to go into how idiotic these categories (and I use that word very loosely) because they defy logic but needless to say in every category the “white” one is clearly “better” than the Asian one.  Let me give you an example of one of the “fair” and unbiased comparisons. When comparing “beauties” of each race he picked these two women as exemplars of each race:

Versus1 What Do White Supremacists Think of Asians?

However, this is not the interesting part of the thread. The interesting part is the ensuing conversation about Asians. Readng it confirmed that the white supremacist’s feelings toward Asians/Asian Americans is complicated.

So here are some of the “positive” comments:

  • I’m not trying to be pro-Asian on a WN site but parts of Asia (mostly Japan & China) are still civilized and intelligent. Try researching real Asian art and culture instead of using stereotypes from “Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips”.
  • While your post did give me a good laugh, we must be fair and acknowledged the achievements of some Asian cultures.Their achievements do not equal those of the Aryans, but one must give them credit because they are far more advanced than africans, aborigines, mestizos and the like.
  • I’m not in love with the Asians but I do respect them as a civilized culture.
  • I don’t hate asians, or really, even dislike them. I respect many of their cultures as disciplined, hard-working, and educated.
  • … agree that post was pretty funny, but lets not forget that Hitler made the Japanese/Asians the honorary race during world war 2. They have made substantial achievements similar to us, not on the same level but they have been a very civilized people as a whole nonetheless. The Japanese, Koreans, and Chinese are all respectable people while the Vietnamese, Indonesians, Cambodians, etc are not known for their contributions. The Asian people especially in our own country face the same problems with their own people and youth like whiggers, “yellow trash” etc.
  • I never said they were stupid, I said they are a danger DUE to their intelligence. The Chinese would crush us in an instant if it were in their best interest.
  • Plus who suffered the worst during the LA riots. It was the Korean business owners that had their businesses destroyed and things stolen by the blacks. Some Asians do love “black culture” but compared to whites the number is low. In fact every Asian I went to HS with would sit with the white students and didn’t want anything to do with blacks. I’ve heard ni**er from Asians before and it wasn’t meant to complement blacks. Also Chinese civilization has been around longer than Northern European civilization. Read up on Emperor Qin whose acheivements predated Christ.

What’s most fascinating about all these “positive” comments are that they seem to be based on some level of respect for (at least some) Asian countries and of course the model minority stereotypes. But what most impresses me is that they are able to differentiate East Asian and Southeast Asian countries.

Of course, not all the comments on the thread are “prositive.” Here is a sampling of some of the “Asians are evil” comments:

  • who is destroying our nations
    a) asians
    b) blacks, mexicans, muslims, Zionists
  • Asians are scum, the most treacherous of scum next to Jews, they don’t steal your bike, like Tyrone or Jose, they steal your intellectual property and use it against you. They are much more treacherous due to their intelligence, but they are just as jealous of white culture and achievements. The Chinese couldn’t get their ICBMS into orbit until they stole the technology from us. Who let them get it? It wasn’t the ‘evil’ Russians, it was Bill Clinton and Al Gore. They are the globe’s leaders in copyright infringement. They don’t respect other’s work because they are incapable of thinking in the way that created it in the first place.
  • A)Who are we in debt with. They are not the “Yellow Peril” for nothing. Who was wrecking our nations back in the day, and who doesn’t need a [racist word here] to do so?. The mongols. The Chinese will become a threat to our race.
  • Asians are given far too much credit and are disgusting. Even the most affluent and intelligent ones have dietary habits that can make a hog gag and the most repulsive and bizarre sexual fetishes.

Where do I begin? I’m not going to go into detail about these but it seems that copyright infringement is very important to this crowd.

In the end, I wouldn’t want to be on a dark street with any of these people – even those that wrote semi-positive comments about Asian/Asian Americans. For me, it comes down to this: If people hate other people for something as arbitrary as the color of their skin or their religion, then most likely (sooner than later) they’ll find something to hate about me. Maybe it’s the shape of my eyes. Or the color of my skin. Or the way I talk. But I have no doubt they’ll find something.

    I think the idea of trying to “generalize” what an entire group thinks of another group is just as harmful as the thoughts themselves.

    As you’ve managed to figure out, the opinions vary greatly, and this is no different than asking “What do Jews think of Asians” or “What do Asians think of blacks”, simply by skimming a handful of posts on the internet and basing your opinion on that.

    Imagine if people thought this was the majority opinion: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/02/27/HATE.TMP&ao=all

  • Phoenix_hernia

    “But when he emerged from the bathroom an angry crowd had formed and he was informed that he was not “colored” and that in the future he was to use the “white” one instead.”

    Was this a white angry crowd or a black angry crowd (or both?)?

    Assuming this was a white crowd, I’m not sure I understand why there would be anger (not that I doubt the story, I just want to understand the reasoning).

  • Danny_Ahmed

    It ain’t worth pondering about what those people think.

  • mwei

    @TienVNguyen or is it the sensationalist media looking for provocative articles to drive up the ad numbers?

    I lol’ed at the IP stealing commentary: reminds me of a recent certain 8asians article…

  • jeffat8asians

    @Phoenix_hernia My father had a similar story. As a Filipino serviceman in the South during Jim Crow, he had the dilemma of choosing between the “colored” and “white” bathrooms. He chose colored, but was later told that he should be using “white.”

  • cdiddy67

    My mother emigrated from China to go to graduate school in the U.S. during the 60′s. She was enrolled at a teacher’s college in Nashville and arrived at the bus terminal thirsty after a long bus ride. When she saw the segregated water fountains she was confused, like the Japanese veteran in the story. When she went to drink from the “colored” fountain, an elderly white lady came running across the terminal frantically trying to stop her from drinking from the wrong fountain. “Drink from the white fountain, dear!” is what she said. My mom said that she and my father (who was a PhD engineering student in Nashville) were always treated as white.

    One time, they went on a double date with an Indian couple (my father’s engineering classmate and his wife). They went to the local movie theater and were separated, my parents going to the white section and the Indian couple being sent to the balcony where “colored” people sat. The prejudice seemed to be based entirely on degree of skin pigmentation… my parents are very fair skinned. Pretty silly if you ask me.

    You gotta love liberals!

    From your linked article:

    “David Lee of the Chinese American Voters Education Committee said Eng’s statement echoes the feelings of some Asian Americans. He said that rather than condemning the paper, black and Asian people should participate in a town hall-style meeting to address tension he said exists between the two communities.

    ‘There is a segment that feels the way Eng does, but the sentiment is underground and not brought to the surface,” Lee said. “If you don’t have a discussion, then I think it allows these types of views to fester and turn into something much more negative. Rather than refute and bury this, we should be calling for a community dialogue to address this.’

    The paper said it will announce in this Friday’s edition plans to co-sponsor a town hall-style meeting with the Willie L. Brown Jr. Institute on Politics & Public Service.”

    Let’s see how productive the planned town hall-style meeting in SF must have been. That article was dated Feb 2007.

    Acc to this article (http://articles.sfgate.com/2010-05-02/bay-area/20882827_1_asians-korean-african-american-black-men ), “[Carol] Mo participated in a 2008 survey by the Police Department in which about 300 strong-arm robberies were analyzed. ‘In 85 percent of the physical assault crimes, the victims were Asian and the perpetrators were African American,’ she said.”

    Yep, getting together and talking really improved things between blacks and Asians in SF in the year after that town hall-style meeting! LOL! (shakes head)

    Koji, this article reminded me of your article, “Do Asian White Supremacists Exist?” (http://www.8asians.com/2011/07/05/do-asian-white-supremacists-exist/ ). At the time I meant to post that the reverse is true: White Asian Supremacists Exist! You will see that many of them readily acknowledge Asians as having higher avg IQs and lower crime rates than whites, and some even break it down acc to subcategories of Asians.

    I’ve noticed 3 major divisions among them: (1) some of them think of Asians as an enemy, threat to pure blood line, white culture, white civilization (which sounds like the mirror image of some Asians’ posts on the web….); (2) some think of Asians as “different” but mostly equal (also builders of a great civilization but want to maintain those as separate civilizations); and (3) some think of Asians as “the ‘other’ white race” and either (3a) don’t mind mixed Asian & Caucasian marriages (inevitable given sharing higher social-economic status), or (3b) actually promote them (“hybrid vigor”, good looks, etc.).

    One site that I actually found worth visiting more than once is http://www.AmRen.com because it has a LOT of news stories that get pretty much ignored by the MainStream Media, both international and domestic. They produced the info found at http://www.colorofcrime.com/ Just watching the first 10 minutes of Jared Taylor’s C-SPAN presentation really opened my eyes:

    http://www.c-spanarchives.org/program/ID/128178

    (FWIW Mr. Taylor’s work was independently verified by Dr. Walter E. Williams (http://www.jewishworldreview.com/cols/williams081899.asp ), who is a Prof. of Econ at George Mason (http://econfaculty.gmu.edu/wew/ ) and an African American.)

    Acc to Taylor, knowing the % of blacks and Latinos in an area is the single strongest predictor of its violent crime rate (0.8 correlation) vs the % of poor in an area or the % of HS dropouts in an area (0.25-0.30), roughly 3x as accurate. That politically incorrect fact blew my “poverty causes crime” beliefs apart, as did work by Heather MacDonald once I discovered her (http://www.manhattan-institute.org/html/mac_donald.htm ). At 6:00 min in of Mr Taylor’s C-SPAN presentation he states that 75% of black on white interracial crimes do NOT advance the black perp’s economic interests. These are crimes like rapes, murders, assault, aggravated assault. Thus, these are black on white violent crimes for the sake of violent crime, not because “poverty causes crime.”

    Back on topic: AmRen calls itself something like “race realist,” acknowledging differences among the races while not advocating hate. While I’ve seen some posts there by all the categories I’ve described above (1, 2, 3a, 3b), I’d say most of their posters are #2, which, I believe, is Mr Taylor’s position.

    @cdiddy67 the most important question here has to be asked: did any Asian guy hook up with a Southern white girl?

    @Phantom ROFL!!! next time I go to the dirty South and tailgating at the football game I’ll go up to a white chick and go “hey, baby. don’t you know that I’m the other white meat?”

    @Phantom BTW, that +1 like was for the first 2 paragraphs. the rest of your post resembles the whole insane lengthy discussions from bigwowo on “HBD”

    if bigwowo is reading this, how can you guys keep going around in circles arguing the same semantics and definitions debates over and over?

    @Phantom “Race realism” sounds like it ignores the effect of institutionalized racism, media perceptions of POC, and most of all, class differences.

    I don’t care about what racists think of us because…why should we give a flying fuck about what racists think? They’re disgusting. End of.

    Interesting story.

  • Elliott

    This whole discussion reminds me of the interesting story of how Asians were treated in South Africa under apartheid. Wikipedia:

    “Chinese immigration caused difficulties for the apartheid regime. Based on the earlier status of Chinese as indentured laborers, the government classified immigrants from Mainland China as ‘non-white’, and therefore subject to numerous restrictions in residence, voting, education, work, free movement, etc. For separate political reasons, the government had classified Taiwanese, Nationalist Chinese, Japanese and South Koreans, as honorary white, and thus granted the same privileges as whites. In 1984, South African Chinese, now increased to about 10,000, finally obtained the same official rights as the Japanese in South Africa, that is, to be treated as whites in terms of the Group Areas Act except that they could not vote or be conscribed.”

    At the same time though, apparently South East Asians were classified as “Coloured”. Pretty interesting.

  • mwei

    @Elliott I imagine in about 50 years white South Africans will make a movie about the struggles of white coolies…

    @mwei@jeffat8asians I would’ve just pissed on them racists.

  • Krantzstone

    @ErikaHarada

    Yet sadly all-too-human. I think it’s important to know how the enemy think, and it’s interesting to see some of the inherent biases and blindspots that are blatantly obvious to the outsider upon reading what these people think, yet it’s also obvious that those racists espousing such views can’t see past their own self-delusions.

    And of course, it’s not like white supremacists have exclusive rights on racism: I’ve met a few minorities who are horribly racist towards other minorities, and it was quite shocking, if not surprising. I think in many ways, racism like any form of discrimination is a form of bullying, and as such, those who are bullied and are too weak to fight back, seek the need to re-empower themselves by attempting to oppress those weaker than themselves using those same tools which were used against them. It’s seen in the way new immigrant races are inevitably oppressed by older immigrant races who learned the tools of oppression from their oppressors.

    And really, most white supremacists are poor, ignorant, uneducated whites who are in many ways oppressed by the rich, advantaged whites, and are only looking to blame minorities because we’re convenient scapegoats and they have this particular blindspot when it comes to race which really prevents them from seeing how it’s members of their own ethnic group who are the real oppressors. They’ll find every Jew on Wall Street by last name and dream up elaborate Zionist conspiracies while entirely ignoring every white, Anglo-Saxon Protestant CEO who made out like bandits during the financial crisis by getting rewarded with golden handshakes and parachutes for totally decimating a company from the top down.While I think poor, ignorant white youth who were fed race hate are dangerous if one were to run into them alone, I also think it’s really sad that many of them will live and die living and breathing that kind of hate-filled world view, and they’ll never really get to experience the really wonderful things about the world, and this life, because they had the unfortunate bad luck to have been born and raised to hate others.

  • Krantzstone

    @Phantom

    The problem is that a lot of these types of studies don’t take into account the fact that the North American black population is pretty unique in that it’s a relatively modern example of the far-reaching repercussions of slavery, cultural genocide, etc.

    Poor Asian immigrants still have a country they can go back to, a culture they can fall back on, etc.: they know who they are, even if they’re poor. The descendents of slaves don’t have that, and centuries of oppression and cultural genocide takes a heavy toll on a people’s psychology, how they’re raised, etc. I refuse to put the blame on race when there are still other factors not accounted for which would make more sense in terms of explaining any differences in crime rates, etc.

    There isn’t really any other modern equivalent to black slavery in North America, although in terms of cultural genocide Native people might have them beat, if only because the Native people also lost their country, and many of their communities are rife with social problems which can be traced back directly to their loss of culture, language, folklore, sense of community, destruction of their social fabric and mores, etc., as well as to racism, oppression, etc.

  • http://hubpages.com/profile/Pamela+N+Red PamelaNRed

    @Krantzstone@ErikaHarada

    Racists come in all ethnicities. It’s interesting why people become discriminatory against a certain group. It’s mostly learned from parents, peers and society around them but sometimes a few incidents with a particular race can cause a person to decide they are all that way and dislike the entire population. Not a good reason but none the less fact.

  • http://hubpages.com/profile/Pamela+N+Red PamelaNRed

    @Krantzstone@Phantom

    Native people have lost our land, culture and in many cases our language. Hard to recover from something like that.

    Sure, I understand that they are just raised that way or they are blaming minorities for their own plight…but I think they are still disgusting. I cant help but look down on them for not being able to think critically (unless they are mentally unstable, as a lot of them seem to be).

    I thankfully don’t deal with this type of racism all that much, aside from a few crazies. The most harmful type of racism in this country, overall, is the more invisible. Institutional type of racism; it affects poc far more often than kkk.

    I was a skinny little 16 year old rude boy when I had the unfortunate experience of my first face to face with neo-Nazi skinheads (fortunately for me no violence ensued), so I’m no fan of white supremacists.But I think critical thinking is something that really has to be taught, as I find it sorely lacking even amongst people who are otherwise clearly intelligent and educated, so it’s not like I can really expect it from people who are poor and have lacked for a decent education, not to mention decent role models.It just seems sad to me that anyone would be so deprived of any true self-worth that the only thing they have to be proud of is their race.

  • Danny_Ahmed

    @Krantzstone@ErikaHarada Well…I knew a few people who had racist sentiments, though not towards Asians. One was my childhood friend, and the rest were acquaintances. So not really my enemies per se.

    Some of the comments I got regarding Asians were like they rather have us over the other minorities. So, it’s like they have some hierarchy of some sort. The main stereotypes some of them have of Asians is that we’re not as violent as the other minorities, and that we actually do something for society (the usual Asian stereotypes of being some type of professional, running successful businesses or simply working hard).

    I think this is one of the most prevalent thought among many White folks with that thinking. That we Asians are still different, not like them, but still rank higher than the other minorities. There are some white racists who put us as equals of some sort or even higher than them. However, I don’t think anyone here would appreciate any such praise from them, despite being somewhat positive for Asians.

    The worst comments I’ve become aware of is the usual too; that we steal jobs and have dirty habits. There’s also the perpetual foreigner stereotype too.

    That’s as much clarity I can give, because really a lot of these people have muddy thoughts. Also a lot of native-born and raised Americans (any race) complain a lot about many things, often very politically un-correct. With the internet, there’s no filter to their words compared with speaking it out loud. So, it’s like we can’t take every passing comment seriously, unless you actually physically interact with the individual.

  • Danny_Ahmed

    @Krantzstone@ErikaHarada I could probably give you one more thing about how the “enemy” thinks. Some of these white supremacists actually do fear Asians over the other minorities. Like Asians as a whole are the only P.O.C they think which can utterly defeat them through nearly all areas of life. Not all of them, but I say a significant-growing- number do.

    The reasoning why they would have those feelings is somewhat complex, but just as muddy as their other beliefs.

  • mwei

    @PamelaNRed like I always said: Asians are given back to First Nations people everyday at the baccarat tables.

  • mwei

    @Danny_Ahmed I heard something mind boggling on a “progressive” radio talk show last night regarding Pearl Harbor: the firebombs in Japan killed more many more civilians per sorte than Pearl Harbor did. and of course, the two atomic bombs don’t need to be mentioned.

    for this reason I think (s)election year 2012 will be pretty “interesting” when it comes to the issue of foreign policy with China.

    and by extension how it affects Chinese-Americans and other APAs.

  • Danny_Ahmed

    @mwei@PamelaNRed Yes, including yours truly.

  • Tofurky

    @ErikaHarada In fact in terms of population white supremacists probably outnumber Asian Americans at least two, maybe three to one.

  • mwei

    @Tofurky except when you’re in China and that low rate multiplied by 1.4billion becomes pretty significant with the fake foods and drugs.

  • Tofurky

    @ErikaHarada It’s important because what they have said just reflects everything most whites think of “Asians” as a whole. It’s just condensed. The vast majority of white people are nothing like the suburban elites most Asians have day to day contacts with.

  • Tofurky

    @Krantzstone@Phantom

    The Chinese in Indonesia were brought to Indonesia as slaves by the Dutch, brutalized on a daily basis, faced pogroms, and then toiled through generations of manual labor to build up what they have now. Even now the Indonesian government has countless anti-Chinese laws in place to privilege themselves, and they banned all Chinese culture for decades.

    And yet Chinese Indonesians don’t commit a lot of crime, in fact like all Chinese everywhere (with no exceptions) populations their crime rate is low, be they poor or rich.

  • Tofurky

    Can’t post much tonite. Lots to do. But I will say don’t assume Wikipedia isn’t biased or doesn’t have a position on race issues. This article from 2007 will give you some background on Wiki’s biased editors:

    @Phantom

    Everything, especially on the internet, is biased in some way. But Wikipedia is as good a starting point as any to read up on things.Jared Taylor is just as biased, he’s just not afraid to admit his biases. He may attempt to separate his site from neo-Nazis and other anti-Semitic groups, but the fact remains, the only people who are really unafraid to subscribe to his views are white supremacists, so what does that make his views?Just because his views are more “moderate” than those clamouring for the blood of non-whites to be spilled, doesn’t make them any more repugnant. He claims to be a ‘racial realist’ but I don’t see anything _real_ about his views except his overt racism. Just because he (like J. Philippe Rushton) believe Asians are superior to whites, doesn’t make him any less racist against blacks or other minorities.

    I’m not saying everything a racist says is incorrect, but definitely one has to look at anything they say about race with suspicion.

    East asians are smarter than whites by about 5 IQ points. The mean verbal IQ of east Asians is below whites, but they make up for it in spatial IQ. This is why east asians have not produced anything close to the literary the west has produced. On the other-hand, though, the overall high IQ of the east Asians allows them to create a civilized and lawful society in which complex engineering projects can be built and maintained. This is helped by the extraordinary spatial IQ. This often translates into exceptional mathematical ability, which is shown year after yeah in the HSC 4 unit math exams. Its usually Asians  at the top; perhaps a sprinkling of Ashkenazim Jews and the occasional white.

    I’ve been around many white supremacists in my life. It’s my understanding that a lot of them hate darker skin color more than whiter skin color. Now, some just hate every other race. But I have always seen a very strong hate against people of very dark skin color before I have seen of others with very light skin (even black people). I have a Filipino boyfriend, and I’ve noticed they do the same thing within their own country, as well as other Asians. The darker ones are thought of as lower class, while the lighter ones are praised. Interestingly, a lot of white people praise tan skin among their race, while very pale ones are thought of as disgusting. The white supremacists I’ve seen that hate Asians tend to feel they are trying to be white somehow, and therefor steal their women/men, culture, and jobs.
