Let’s Overanalyze An SNL Skit: J-Pop Talk Show

Let’s Overanalyze An SNL Skit: J-Pop Talk Show

Now that we’ve established that, yes, there are people who aren’t Asian who like Asian music, leave it up to Saturday Night Live to present this in a comedy skit called J-Pop America Fun Time Now, a mock college TV show where two white anime fans honor Japanese culture by looking like idiots. Read how the writers of a TV show are able to make jokes about Japanese people without getting protested by Huffington Post [...] Continue »

Friend-Zoned Phil Meme: Who Is Phil and Why Is He Asian?

“Friend-Zoned Phil” is the latest meme with an Asian guy circulating the intarwebs, thanks to those crazy folks at Reddit. Behold! The Friend-Zoned Phil Meme is an image series featuring an Asian guy “Phil,” who is in the friend zone– that is, a guy who has a really great girl friend that’s not a girlfriend. Fox Sports Airs Racist USC Video, Then Apologizes

Fox Sports thought this video of reporter Bob Oschack visiting the USC campus for man on the street interviews with Asian college students would be hilarious. The Internet thought otherwise and last Saturday, Fox Sports issued an apology to “the entire USC community” for airing the piece.

Rock Jocks’ KevJumba on Acting & YouTube

Rock Jocks’ KevJumba on Acting & YouTube

You’ve seen KevJumba on YouTube and The Amazing Race, but soon you can watch him on the big screen in Rock Jocks, his first feature film! 8Asians was invited to the set of the indie comedy, which follows the adventures of a highly classified government agency with the sole responsibility of shooting down asteroids to save the Earth. We caught up with Justin Chon earlier but here’s what Kevin Wu had to say about working [...] Continue »

Justin Chon Talks Rock Jocks, Twilight & Life as an APA Actor

Justin Chon Talks Rock Jocks, Twilight & Life as an APA Actor

Rock Jocks is about to redefine the genre of video game movies. While most studios interpret gaming on big screens as over the top film adaptations of popular franchises (think Prince of Persia…and then stop thinking about it, because it’s painful), this indie comedy focuses on gamers themselves–and that includes The Guild’s Felicia Day, YouTube star KevJumba and Twilight’s own Justin Chon. Directed by Paul Seetachitt, Rock Jocks follows the adventures of a motley crew [...] Continue »

Just Kidding Films: Pushing Asian Stereotype Boundaries

Since 2007, Bart Kwan and Joe Jo of Just Kidding Films have been pushing the boundaries of the Asian stereotype on YouTube with their unique perspectives and outrageous comedic flavor. With similar comparisons to Peter Chao and The Notorious MSG,  their alter egos (The Uncos) have become a well-known staple in the YouTube community as a spoof of two middle-aged Vietnamese badasses with ridiculously exaggerated accents that love to party and get it on with [...] Continue »

Margaret Cho Portrays Kim Jung-Il on 30 Rock

In the most recent episode of 30 Rock, comedian and actress Margaret Cho guest stars as the crazy and idiosyncratic North Korean dictator Kim Jung-Il who has taken Jack Donaghy’s wife Avery hostage while she is on assignment in Asia for CNBC. I could tell during the episode that the actor was a woman, but couldn’t tell who was playing Kim since Cho was wearing sun glasses during the whole episode. Only until the end of the episode [...] Continue »

8Questions with “The Durrian” Editors

8Questions with “The Durrian” Editors

An Asian American news satire blog called The Durrian has made quite a splash in just its second week of existence. Similar to the concept of The Onion, the satirical publication puts their very own unique twist on the way they present their stories. Sarcastically claiming to be the “number 3 source for American-Asian news,” The Durrian’s articles parody current events, celebrities, as well as real/fictional happenings in the Asian American media. Although the focus [...] Continue »
