Former Olympian Dr. Amy Chow on Childhood Obesity

A few Sunday mornings ago, I was flipping the channels and came across local television station ABC7 News’s Beyond the Headlines Sunday morning program, where former gymnast and three-time Olympic team winner Dr. Amy Chow was discussing the growing epidemic of childhood obesity.

Prelude Norcal Hip Hop Dance Competition: A Personal Recount [PARTNER POST]

By Denise My decision to take on the role of Company Manager for Prelude Norcal Hip Hop Dance Competition, hosted by Main Stacks dance team in Berkeley, CA, came at a time of great confusion. While all of my peers around me were focusing all their energy on locking in jobs in huge business firms, I was faced the difficult task of convincing my mother to sponsor my 3-month stay in Berkeley while I planned [...] Continue »

San Francisco’s Rose Pak Rise From Activist To Power Broker

San Francisco’s Rose Pak Rise From Activist To Power Broker

Inevitably, when discussing San Francisco politics, one will read about a behind-the-scenes “power broker” named Rose Pak. I haven’t really blogged about her because, to be honest, I did not know much about her. Pak was one of the driving forces to get Ed Lee appointed as interim mayor of San Francisco, as well as influencing him to run for mayor, despite Lee’s initial promise not to as a condition of becoming interim mayor.

San Francisco Elects First Asian American Mayor, Ed Lee

San Francisco Elects First Asian American Mayor, Ed Lee

This past Tuesday, appointed interim Mayor Ed Lee became the first ever Asian American to be elected Mayor of San Francisco. Due to the sixteen candidates running to replace departed Gavin Newsom and ranked choice voting, the final results were not made official until Wednesday. Lee, a bureaucrat and political novice when he was appointed to the mayor’s job last January, finished with 61 percent of the vote after the second- and third-place ranked-choice votes [...] Continue »

The College Admissions Game, Part 2: Race and School Selection

The College Admissions Game, Part 2: Race and School Selection

“I don’t want to go there – it’s too Asian!” That is the last thing I wanted to hear from the Daughter. Doesn’t she know I write for a blog on Asian American issues, and now she is going all Alexandra Wallace on me? Then again, that is a sentiment that I have heard from other Asian Americans. Just how did she come up with that opinion? Did it come from some kind of Asian [...] Continue »

NPR / KQED: Why Taiwan Matters: Small Island, Global Powerhouse

NPR / KQED: Why Taiwan Matters: Small Island, Global Powerhouse

As a Taiwanese American, I’m always interested in reading, hearing or watching in the American media discussions about Taiwan. So it was with great pleasure a few days ago that my local National Public Radio affiliate, San Francisco’s KQED, dedicated a whole hour show in its daily morning local program Forum on Taiwan. The segment an interview with  Shelley Rigger, author and professor of East Asian politics at Davidson College and her new book, Why [...] Continue »

Asian American Commercial Watch: MoveOn.org Ad Against Oakland Mayor Jean Quan

I was flipping through the channels the other day, and was surprised to see how quickly this ad by MoveOn.org got on the air two days later after the Oakland police crackdown on the Occupy Oakland demonstrators. Personally, I support the Occupy Wall Street movement and am certainly supportive of all peaceful expressions of free speech and the message they are conveying. I’m an Ivy League graduate with a “Top 10″ MBA, and I am [...] Continue »

Oakland High School Students Create Comic Book On Immigrant Experience

With the help of their art teacher, students at Oakhland International High School–many of whom are immigrants and learning to speak English–have detailed their experiences by drawing and writing comics: “By asking her students to create these comics, Bui is not only teaching them to tell stories through art, but she is helping them make sense of their lives and process what they have gone through. Bui has only reflected on her and her family’s [...] Continue »
