Glee Casting for Mike Chang’s (Harry Shum Jr.) Parents

8a glee Glee Casting for Mike Chang’s (Harry Shum Jr.) Parents

Season 3 spoiler alert for Glee fans! (Well, if you read the headline, I already spoiled it for you, so sorry about that.)

Although we love to TalkAbout the Asians on Glee here on 8Asians, there are plenty of folks who complain about how the show “gets the Asian characters mostly wrong” or about the lack of depth and backstory for two the main Asian American characters, Mike and Tina.

We should be getting more backstory on Mike Chang (Harry Shum Jr.) soon since according to Michael Ausiello’s “Ask Ausiello” scoop column, “…it appears producers are making good on their promise to give Mike Chang a mom and dad. The show is quietly casting an Asian couple — stylish wife, conservative dad — to potentially recur this season.”

So who would be your picks to play Mike Chang’s parents?

We’ll find out for sure who the producers cast for these roles in Season 3 of Glee. Until then, you can peruse some of our favorite Glee discussions:

  • Who would be a good Filipina maid on Glee?
  • Is Darren Criss Filipino enough?
  • What do you think about Charice returning to Glee?
  • Do you like Sunshine Corazon? Can you see Charice’s Botox?
  • (And, of course) Do you hate Charice?

Hmmm. I’m sensing a theme to our Glee discussions. Are you?

His dad should be Randall Park. Dunno who should fill the mom spot though.

  • mwei

Margaret Cho obviously – considering the targeted demographic…

don’t look at me, Neil Patrick Harris sang and danced it best last year.

@Sycada As much as I love Randall Park, he’s too young-looking to play Mike Chang’s dad. (Then again, it is easier to make someone look older than younger.)

  • Sycada

@jozjozjoz Maybe Mike Chang just has a really young-looking dad :D

I asked the same question on my FB page about the Mom and people are naming Tamlyn Tomita, Ming-Na, Lauren Tom– so basically the cast of the Joy Luck Club (why does everyone forget Rosalind Chao?!) — but the suggestions are all paired with “… but’s too young-looking to be a teenager’s Mom!” Yay Asian youth genes!

@mwei I have been thinking about this and even though Carrie Ann Inaba looks too young to be a teenager’s Mom, I would like to see her so they can do an epic Mom & Son dance routine or two.

Joan Chen has had alot of experience playing mom-types and is certainly stylish! As for dad….Ken Watanabe? He would add the necessary gravitas to play a conservative Asian dad. And both of them are 50 and not “too young”
