I vaguely remember the story about nursing student Michelle Le in late May this year, who disappeared after leaving a Hayward hospital during a break from a clinical rotation. Rewards were offered by the grief-stricken family, and police investigators seemed to have scoured the streets from information from various persons of interest. Yet, no arrests were made at the time. Months have now gone by, and sad to say, we can assume that she is dead. Unfortunately, you need to have a body to call it a murder case.

“DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. today announced that its summer blockbuster, Kung Fu Panda 2, has grossed over $650 million globally to date, making Jennifer Yuh Nelson the highest-grossing female director of a film at the worldwide box office.” Yay! Well, half-yay, since the top movies directed by women have all been animated or animated/live-action hybrid movies – the “friendliest environment for women directors, as if Hollywood feels that that’s a safe zone in which to hand women the keys to the car.”
North Korea is taking a creative approach to boost tourism (and possibly their image). Their tourism board has ollaborated with a Chinese travel company to put together a scenic 21 hour cruise from Rajin to Mount Kumgang. Oh, did someone say “scenic?”

Welcome to another edition of Asians Behaving Badly and this time, we’re featuring Edward Younghoon Shin of Southern California. It’s a pretty grisly murder case, where Shin has been arrested last week for allegedly killing his business partner, Christopher Ryan Smith whose body is still missing. Sad, right? But the twist doesn’t end there. Continue Reading »

Our favorite cellist, Yo-Yo Ma, will be in good company for the 34th Annual Kennedy Center Honors. He will be coronated with the prestigious honor alongside Meryl Streep, Neil Diamond, Sonny Rollins and Barbara Cook. “This year, the Kennedy Center selects five extraordinary individuals whose collective artistry has contributed significantly to the cultural life of our nation and the world,” said Kennedy Center Chairman David M. The backlash against Fox Sports’ offensive video about Asians on the USC campus continues, with Forbes reporting that the network will no longer air its show, The College Experiment: “Fox Sports Network spokesman Lou D’Ermilio said in a statement that last week’s segment was “clearly offensive and inconsistent with the standards FOX Sports believes in, and we sincerely regret that it appeared.” He said the show that aired the video, The College Experiment would be cancelled effective immediately.” Fox Sports’ formal apology now includes the Asian and Asian American community. Props to Forbes for also mentioning a statement from University of Colorado professor Darryl Maeda on the “perpetual foreigner” stereotype. So can we count this incident as one step forward in positive APA representation?

Cupertino public schools have a reputation for academic excellence and a large Asian American population. Two schools in the Cupertino Union School District, Faria and Murdock-Portal, scored 998 out of 1000 on the Academic Performance Index (API), a tie for first in the state of California. What is the Federal “No Children Left Behind” (NCLB) rating for the Cupertino Union School District? FAIL. Cupertino was listed as being in Program Improvement (PI), the federal equivalent of F. You might wonder, “how could this be?”

Many Asian Americans in Southern California call San Gabriel Valley the “626” or the abbreviation, SGV. I’ve even had a couple of friends who aren’t from Southern California ask why is San Gabriel Valley even called “626”?
The way I explain it is—the name came from the area code of San Gabriel Valley and you know, Asians like math so instead of enunciating the actual name of the location, we just use numbers to identify it. I seriously believe only Asians call San Gabriel Valley “626.” Am I right on this? I wonder why other cities populated by a majority of Asians aren’t identified by their area codes too—like 415 (San Francisco), 718 (New York City), and the list goes on.
Evidently, there’s a story from Yardbarker making the rounds that “LPGA golfers Natalie Gulbis and Paula Creamer are furious with the clothing choice made by Olivia Munn during her tour debut at the Canadian Women’s Open. ‘The tour has standards. For her to disrespect the sport like she did in Vancouver is unacceptable,’ Gulbis wrote on Twitter.”
I’m a little doubtful these two golfers publicly said this since I actually looked at Natalie and Paula‘s twitter feeds for the last month and I didn’t see anything of the sort.
That said, assuming they did say Olivia Munn was “disrespecting the sport”– and I’m no Olivia Munn fan and I hate to defend her– but what did they expect for her to wear?

Number Two Son likes to watch the Disney Channel, and while he was watching, I noticed a trailer for a new show called Jessie. What caught my attention was a character named Ravi who gets received the bad end of prank around 0:40. I immediately thought of another Indian American character – “Baljeet” from Phineas and Ferb. Number Two Son’s opinion of Ravi: “another stereotypical Indian – nerdy, gets beat up a lot.” This article from Divanee, a South Asian News and Entertainment web site, asks the following question about Ravi: “Is Hollywood Ready for a South Asian American Child Star?
