CBS films already bought the movie rights to 27-year-old author Marie Lu’s new young adult novel Legend. That’s gotta mean something good about the book right? (Okay, except that the Twilight producers are attached to the plans which makes me a bit more skeptical).
As a YA fiction lover (even as someone who no longer really fits into the YA audience bracket…), Legend looks like an action-packed, dystopian thrilling novel with maybe some of the same kinds of themes as the super popular Hunger Games (maybe you’ve heard of it once or twice or all the time, what with the movie about to come out and the fact that it’s been all the rage even among adults, seriously.) The dystopian, rather violent and morally complex plot lines pitting teens against each other is a pretty serious trend in new YA fiction.

From Voice of America: “Kraze, pronounced ‘crazy,’ started in 1998 and was inspired by an American hamburger chain called Johnny Rockets. It has grown quickly, and there are now over 100 locations in Korea. The company has recently expanded to Singapore, Hong Kong and Macao, with plans to open five outlets in the DC area through 2012. [One customer] says, ‘I think it’s very different from American hamburgers,” she said. “It’s less greasy, and I think the ingredients are more healthy.’”

When you hear news about “College Admissions Consultants,” it’s often sensationalized and over the top. Take this article about a consultant who will guarantee a kid’s college acceptance or your money back or this article about Michele Hernandez, who is said to charge as much as $40,000. We did hire a “college planning consultant,” but not for an insanely large amount like $40,000 and not for the reason you might expect that an Asian American parent in Silicon Valley would have.
How can we say no to the Mimobot x Hello Kitty 2GB flash drive ($23)? With this new “toy,” we have a place to store all our data, and we have something cute to stare at while we save heaps of work onto the little fella. The convenience of this kitty makes us want to bring it along with us anywhere and everywhere. Your Hello Kitty can’t get any more tech than this.
Ironically, I was traveling abroad when the latest season of The Amazing Race kicked off at the end of September and never caught up on watching this season. Well, Cindy Chiang and her fiance Ernie Halvorsen, won this past Sunday. Congratulations to the both of them! From Cindy’s words in this video clip, sounds like she had Tiger parents…

TLC’s All-American Muslim profiles several Michigan Muslim families as normal people with everyday issues and triumphs. It has been generally well received by the public and critics, which I see this as a real positive sign that we are making changes in this nation in terms of how we see people around us. But not everybody shares this belief as hardware store Lowe’s pulled their advertisings of the show.
The first full trailer for John Chu’s kind of anticipated G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation flooded blogs and websites. The follow-up to the first million dollar installment worthy of B-movie acclaim, looks promising. It has lots of explosions, guns, Asian people doing stuff and a brand new cast of characters. Let’s go through some of the trailer’s highlights.
UPDATE: Congrats to our winner: Tia K!

Blend Creations seemed like a fitting name for a contemporary jewelry line when husband & wife team Eric Jean-Louis and Vivian Cheng decided to partner in an artistic business venture. Together, graphic designer Eric, and industrial designer Vivian, combine their divergent design approaches to create a contemporary jewelry line that is clean and modern in aesthetic, yet also blends their respective cultures in East meeting West.

[Author's note: Although I am employed by the Japanese American National Museum, this article should not be construed as coming from the National Museum. Instead, this article is my personal opinion and should be taken as such.]
On December 9, 2011 the New York Times published an article titled, “The How of an Internment, but Not All the Whys,” by Edward Rothstein. This article is not only offensive but worse, it is ignorant. It is appalling that such a prestigious newspaper would print an article like it. It is sad that even after 70 years, the same lies and misinformation about Japanese Americans during World War II are still being perpetuated by a major American newspaper.
The classic Australian soap opera, Neighbours, is best known for featuring now well known cast members, like Guy Pearce, Kylie Minogue and Natalie Imbruglia but now they’re introducing their first all-Indian family–and not every fan is happy: “Melbourne-born of Indian descent, Sachin Joab is part of the long-running TV soap’s attempt to tackle perceptions the show is too white and doesn’t represent modern Australia….Neighbours staff…were forced to remove several racist posts from fans angry a non-Anglo-Saxon family would become show regulars, writing ‘that racism and small-mindedness won’t be tolerated.” Racism, it’s not just an American thing!

I first joined the bone marrow donor registry in the early nineties, after reading about a Chinese boy with leukemia who was looking for a match. Back then (and still the case now), Asian donors were rare, and finding a match if you are of Asian ethnicity or hapa unlikely. It’s almost 20 years later after I joined the registry, and while the issues around bone marrow donation haven’t changed much, the available methods to recruit new donors has.
UPDATE: Congrats to our winners: A. Wan, Howard Der, Corinne Smith, Wee, and Lucy!

Asian Crew Inc. strives to “fight stereotypes, one obnoxious statement at a time.” In their words, “We got tired of the conventional, cutesy, and frankly racist T-shirts meant for Asians on the market, so we decided to make our own. No more karate kicks, math problems, or Confucius quotes. Just some in-your-face statements printed on high quality clothing. So if you love who you are but hate being labeled, you came to the right place.”
If you want to fight stereotypes one shirt at a time, Asian Crew Inc. is giving lucky 8Asians readers a chance to win one of these three t-shirts:
