The main Canuck here I (sometimes) give a different perspective. I used to be 'read only' but you can actually hear me via POP 88 on 8Asians podcasting sister site Popcast88.com. Always trying to find that right balance between fluff and substance, I tend to focus my interests in discovering different perspectives. Look forward to hearing (and perhaps seeing) things you wouldn't anywhere else. Current vice and embarrassingly obsessed with: Kpop group AFTER SCHOOL

Is North America Ready for Japanese Heavy Metal Band X-Japan?

Yoshiki stands in his rightful place setting the stage for X-Japan.

Yoshiki stands in his rightful place setting the stage for X-Japan The second last stop of their first North American tour, X-Japan rocked Toronto’s Massey Hall last night. I’ll admit, I know very little about X-Japan. What I do know is that they are huge superstars in Japan: frontman/vocals Toshi and drummer/songwriter Yoshiki knew each other since school, where they played together in a band which eventually evolved and lead to the wildly successful X-Japan. You’ll notice I sound a bit different in this episode. In fact, I’ve got a guest DJ who kindly asked if he could mix this episode for me. And seeing as how I haven’t exactly learned how to spin, virtual or otherwise, it probably would be something fun and different for you all to listen to. Please welcome DJ PLo from KSCU 103.3FM in Santa Clara who can also be heard at OMGKPOP.com Wednesday Evenings [...] Continue »

Hey Everyone! I’m finally back from my hiatus and hope everyone out there is enjoying their summer. Lots of requests and new tunes with a bit of housekeeping all ready for your listening pleasure. I also talk about the new film Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and what I have been doing to save my busy self from going insane. Fluxus Music’s Tribute to Michael Jackson

So, how does the anniversary of the King of Pop’s death have to do with the Asian Diaspora? Well, it would be foolish to not acknowledge Michael Jackson’s contribution in music worldwide. After all, it was only in North America where his popularity nose-dived and was seen as a freak. Still, the legend does live on, in the case with the above song done by artists from a Korean label called Fluxus Music. Info taken [...] Continue »

More Thoughts on The Karate Kid Remake

Things to consider when watching the 2010 version of The Karate Kid: Throw the haterade out and watch with an open mind. Nevermind the film is called The Karate Kid and should have been called The Kung-Fu Kid instead. In my opinion, the latter title sounds corny particularly because it’s a remake of the former. The film isn’t about whatever martial arts is showcased but about bullies and learning to stand up for yourself. I [...] Continue »

POP 88 #42 – The House of Suh

POP 88 #42 - The House of Suh [ 31:39 ] Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (306)

While there were a lot of really fascinating documentaries shown at this year’s Hot Docs World Documentary Festival in Toronto this past week, one of the more stand out ones was “The House of Suh”. Directed by Iris Shim, the documentary shows the rise and demise of a Korean-American family that was so intriguing, it was made into a TV film called, “Bad To the Bone” in 1997 starring Kristy Swanson and Jeremy London. I [...] Continue »

Global Talk Show: East vs. West Perspectives

Starting from Top to Bottom

Most people who follow my antics from POP 88 would know I LOVE watching Global Talk Show, an informal round table of “foreigners” living and working in Korea. Since my last post about this show, it has gone through a controversy which resulted in the entire production crew being fired resigning, added some male eye candy as a result (Poh, rowr!) and seems to have now gone through a format change involving questions relating to [...] Continue »

Grab Your Glowsticks! This was at the request of Cassandra who wanted to hear a para-trance/ eurobeat show. Since there are so many forms of trance music and everyone has their own opinion on it, I came up with this non-stop mix. Personally, I’m more of a house and club beat girl. Course, just hours after I finished the mix down, I got inundated with remixes for After School’s new track Bang! (You must check [...] Continue »

POP 88 #38 - Last Train Home [ 0:01 ] Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (529)

As promised, here are the first of three new episodes to make up for me getting busy/coming down with pneumonia. It was a slight challenge getting a hold of Director Lixin Fan. After all, his prestigious award-winning documentary film Last Train Home had him being invited to festivals left, right and center — not bad for a Canadian film and a debut feature for this young director from China. The podcast is, of course, the [...] Continue »
