DUDE WTF ASIA: China Forcing Prisoners in Virtual Gold Farming

DUDE WTF ASIA: China Forcing Prisoners in Virtual Gold Farming

Having been a game reviewer for ages who hasn’t found a genre of video games that I didn’t like, I’m not surprised when I read that China had gold farming prisons. I actually have participated in gold farming in games like Second Life when it was still legal.  Gold farming, if you’ve never heard of the term before, is basically the process of doing tedious work in a virtual world for items that you then [...] Continue »

Rock Jocks’ KevJumba on Acting & YouTube

Rock Jocks’ KevJumba on Acting & YouTube

You’ve seen KevJumba on YouTube and The Amazing Race, but soon you can watch him on the big screen in Rock Jocks, his first feature film! 8Asians was invited to the set of the indie comedy, which follows the adventures of a highly classified government agency with the sole responsibility of shooting down asteroids to save the Earth. We caught up with Justin Chon earlier but here’s what Kevin Wu had to say about working [...] Continue »

Justin Chon Talks Rock Jocks, Twilight & Life as an APA Actor

Justin Chon Talks Rock Jocks, Twilight & Life as an APA Actor

Rock Jocks is about to redefine the genre of video game movies. While most studios interpret gaming on big screens as over the top film adaptations of popular franchises (think Prince of Persia…and then stop thinking about it, because it’s painful), this indie comedy focuses on gamers themselves–and that includes The Guild’s Felicia Day, YouTube star KevJumba and Twilight’s own Justin Chon. Directed by Paul Seetachitt, Rock Jocks follows the adventures of a motley crew [...] Continue »

The 8Asians Talk About Mortal Kombat: Legacy

Our internal e-mail lists have us discussing all kinds of stuff: Asian American identity, representation in the media, the experiences of activism in an academia setting and its progression as we transition to the working, adult world. And sometimes we talk about Mortal Kombat: Legacy, the new live-action web series based on the Mortal Kombat video game franchise. The series is filmed in a darker setting, meaning no campy fighting tournaments or color palettes that [...] Continue »

Homefront’s Tae Kim Addresses Yellow Peril Controversy

Homefront’s Tae Kim Addresses Yellow Peril Controversy

[EDITOR'S NOTE: This article was originally posted on G4tv.com and a portion of this has been reposted here with permission.] When Homefront was announced as an game about a North Korean invasion on American soil, I had to roll my eyes. Here was yet another instance of “Yellow Peril,” where Asians are painted as the ultimate enemy by the entertainment industry, and this time, we were threatening precious American freedom. We’ve already dealt with enough [...] Continue »

World of Warcraft and StarCraft Theme Park to Open in China

G4TV reports that an amusement park based on the video games World of Warcraft and Starcraft will be opening in China, with the only-in-China-would-they-give-this-English-name JoyWorld. Why isn’t a Blizzard Theme Park opening in South Korea, where Starcraft is king and there are entire cable networks dedicated to the real-time strategy game? Probably because Korea doesn’t have, you know, billions of people that could potentially make the game a household name.

What Asian American kids watch on the Internet: Freddie Wong’s YouTube Channels

My sons like first person shooter games such as the Call of Duty series, and they often watch YouTube videos of people playing such games in order to learn new tricks and tactics.  I noticed that Number Two Son was looking at what looked like a Call of Duty game, but the players were live real people!  It turns out the video shown above, Future First Person Shooter is one in a series of videos [...] Continue »

A Look Into South Korea’s Anti-Gaming Boot Camps

In America, we have boot camps for kids suffering from obesity. In South Korea, they offer boot camps for teens addicted to playing video games. All Voices posted 15 photos inside one of these anti-gaming camps where “young soldiers” are taught to become independent, stronger and more responsible through physical training, talking about their feelings and…bathing in snow, according to one photo. Inmates are pushed over assault courses and learn to ride horses, as well [...] Continue »

Homefront: The Face of Xenophobia & Video Games

Several days ago, I got an audition for an internet ad campaign called “The Journey” where they needed Korean men. At first, I was extremely excited and also because the gig paid $300 a day. But then when I looked closer, I realized that the internet ad campaign was for the upcoming video game Homefront. Homefront, we meet again. The last time I saw you was several months ago, when I was a North Korean [...] Continue »

DUDE WTF ASIA: Japanese Resort Attracts Men with Virtual Girlfriends

First saw this on Slashdot and thought I’d share the story here: a Japanese resort is now catering to men with Virtual girlfriends from the game Love Plus (a trailer of the game is above).  Love Plus is a simulation game that lets you develop a “relationship’ with a virtual anime girlfriend, and apparently it has been a hit for its maker Konami.  One guy even “married” his Love Plus girlfriend. One recent sweltering summer’s [...] Continue »

DJ Qbert to Appear in DJ Hero 2

DJ Qbert to Appear in DJ Hero 2

Filipinos, rejoice! World famous DJ Qbert, he of Invisibl Skratch Piklz and Scratch, the synonymous documentary on turntablism, will be converted into CGI-generated goodness and will appear in Activision’s music based video game, DJ Hero 2.  Which makes sense, right?  The game is essentially Guitar Hero with turntables and fader switches and sampler buttons rather than an electric guitar, and what better way to showcase a turntable than, oh, the three-time DMC World Champion?  I [...] Continue »
