Giveaway: 4-pack of Tickets to Formula Drift – Round 5, The Throwdown in Monroe, WA

UPDATE 7/20/2011: Congrats to our winner, Matt B!

The folks in the Northwest are some of the most die-hard drift fans in the nation. The energy and excitement there is often compared to the original “House of Drift.” The event’s headline moniker, “Throwdown,” lives up to its name as drivers push their vehicles to the limits of the track’s banking and tight transitions through the course resulting in one of the most exciting action-packed events of the season. 8Asians is giving away two (2) sets of four-pack tickets for this weekend’s Formula DRIFT’s Pro-Championship Round 5 – THROWDOWN at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, WA (July 22 – 23, 2011 at 12pm).

In the last few months since 8Asians is gave away tickets to Formula DRIFT’s Streets of Long Beach (Round 1), Rounds 2 through 4 were held on tracks all over the nation. (Ken Gushi, who we interviewed here at 8Asians, is currently ranked in 13th place.)

Ok, ok, you just want to know how to win the tickets? Read on!

The United States Vs. Takaichi Sakai: No No, Part 2 of 5

In Part 1, my grandfather, Takaichi Sakai, was arrested and investigated by the FBI. An Internee Hearing Board in February 1943 ordered that he be “interned for the duration of the war.” A few weeks later, the Military Governor had him sent to a “relocation center” on the Mainland.

My grandmother, Sato Sakai, was given the opportunity to stay in Hawaii or accompany her husband to prison camps on the mainland. Her trouble with her in-laws, her inability to care for the family on her own, and her desire to keep everyone together, made the choice of going with my grandfather easy: they were all sent to Topaz, Central Utah.

No Harry Potter For China Until Patriotic Movie Makes $120 Million

Despite the record breaking box office numbers, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt 2 hasn’t opened yet in China. Rumor has it that moviegoers in China won’t be allowed to watch just yet: “Despite adamant denials by a co-director, Huang Jianxin, many audiences seem to believe one prevailing rumor: that foreign blockbusters will be delayed until “Great Revival” receipts surpass $120 million. Such suspicions are reinforced by a couple of undeniable truths: Transformers: Dark of the Moon will not reach China until Thursday, three weeks behind the United States premiere, while Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is not scheduled to land here until Aug. 4. “

Last week on The Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert interviewed  self-disclosed undocumented immigrant and award winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas in an entertaining and yet at times serious manner. My thoughts on illegal / undocumented immigration are rooted from my parents’ and friends’ experience on immigration and naturalization as American citizens.

8Asians’ The A-Word: Episode #4 – Influenced by the Media

  • “a word” [noun] – a short talk or conversation
  • “A-Word” [noun] – a unit of the English language, starting with the letter ‘A’

8Asians’ The A-Word — the official podcast of 8Asians.com — aims to be a fun conversation piece talking expertly about things we don’t know about, and having very serious debates about trivial things. (Man, I need to get rid of that photo.)

It is almost needless to say that we are a culture influenced by the media. No matter where we absorb it through TV or the Internet, it’s there, it becomes part of our language, our jokes, our memories. So what happens when decisions are made because of it?

ABC’s The Bachelorette Highlights Taiwan

http://www.hulu.com/watch/257322/the-bachelorette-week-7-part-1

In last week’s episode, The Bachelorette took the remaining bachelors and The Bachelorette, Ashley, on a tour through Taiwan. As a Taiwanese American, I am always happy to see Taiwan highlighted in American mainstream media since I don’t think most Americans have any idea about Taiwan, especially when compared to Japan, China or Korea, etc. Ashley described Taiwan as Asia’s “hidden treasure.” Though if I were an American interested in visiting Asia, I can understand why one might want to visit Beijing, Shanghai or Tokyo first before Taipei. But I have to think that this is probably the biggest PR coup for Taiwan tourism to date (only a season of Survivor would highlight Taiwan even more).

Lady Gaga Wants to Adopt a Baby from South Asia

Aww guys, isn’t this cute?  According to a recent article by Gather Celebs, a friend of Lady Gaga has said “that she wants her designer baby to come from Asia, perhaps Nepal, India, or Bangladesh.” And when you think about it, a brown baby would make a perfect accessory to her next red carpet appearance, a nice compliment to her dead Kermit dress, her meat dress and that egg/womb thing that she got carried in that one time at some awards show. And if that Bangladeshi child ever asks why mama looks so different than her, Lady Gaga can simply reply that they were Born This Way. (See what I did there? Sorry. My bad.)

Womens World Cup Final Lead to Obvious and Stupid Pearl Harbor Jokes on Twitter

Oh, Twitter: come to microblog about the lunch you had today, stay to see the tweets on the Women’s World Cup Final against the United States and Japan happening right now — and roll your eyes at the oh-too-predictable Pearl Harbor jokes. So many, in fact, that “Pearl Harbor” is now a trending topic along with #worldcupfinal.

For what it’s worth, we here at 8Asians think that if you’re going to be offensive and racist and hit below the belt, the least you could do is make a tsunami or nuclear meltdown reference; I mean, at least that shit was more recent, right?

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan Review

When I first saw the trailer for Snow Flower and The Secret Fan, I had horrifying fears that this film would be Joy Luck Club 2: Asian Women Being Oppressed by Asian Culture (Again) since it was also directed by Wayne Wang. Words can’t quite describe how much I dislike Amy Tan’s book and the film adaptation, even though I am aware that it is one of the few instances where a Hollywood production used a primarily Asian cast. In some ways, Joy Luck Club was a breakthrough film that gave many of the Asian actresses more work.
