VIRAL LIKE SARS: YouTube Videos Cover Jeremy Lin “Linsanity”

Man, with all this coverage about Jeremy Lin on Asian American blogs, it’s like we found something else to talk about besides Tiger Moms or interracial relationships! It’s official: with Jeremy Lin having three straight games of at least 20 points and 7 assists, a winning streak, and a dunk, there is bonafide sports media “Linsanity.” (You know you’ve made it big when someone coins a pun after you.) And you know what that means: [...] Continue »

VIRAL LIKE SARS: North Korean Accordion Players Perform a-ha’s Take On Me

And for your musical interlude of the day, we bring you a group of accordion players from North Korea’s Kum Song School performing the 80′s hit, “Take On Me” by a-ha. (In case you were wondering, they’re still sobbing over the death of Kim Jong-Il on the inside.) (Also, I didn’t know they listened to a-ha in North Korea. Did you?) (And they have accordions there, too? Crazy.)

Top 7 Best “Sh*t ___ Say” Videos About Asian People

Top 7 Best “Sh*t ___ Say” Videos About Asian People

Ever since the “Shit Girls Say” video launched onto YouTube a month ago, the internet community took it as a chance to create every single commentary out there about a specific group of people that they would like to parody. While some have been clever like “Shit White Girls Say…to Black Girls” due to its ability to incorporate a true social commentary on racial dynamics, many others have been failures. With the “Shit ____ Say” [...] Continue »

VIRAL LIKE SARS: Manikako’s Robot Love Story Will Make You Weep

I’m not quite sure what this short film is for, except that it’s the result of a sponsorship between Energizer batteries and Manikako, a Filipino non-profit organization that provides self-expression and an emotional outlet for underprivileged children through doll crafting. In this video, a robot finds love in a beautiful doll but learns what the ultimate sacrifice can be. Oh, and here’s a box of tissues.

VIRAL LIKE SARS: Adorable Asian Girl Bids Farewell To Everyone At The Mall

Guess what? It’s time for your heart to melt over this adorable video: little Chloe discovers the train of people taking the escalator down at Copley Place Mall and is polite (and cute) enough to bid them adieu. I’m glad her parents are teaching her proper manners–and I’m also glad they’re filming every moment of it. PS. For a second, I did mistake this Asian baby to be Koji’s boy because it’s true. They all [...] Continue »

DUDE WTF ASIA: SNL Korea Does Blackface

DUDE WTF ASIA: SNL Korea Does Blackface

For starters, I didn’t even know there was a Korean version of Saturday Night Live — so it came as a surprise to me when folks have been bringing to my attention that SNL Korea did a parody of “Dreamgirls”…entirely in blackface. You can see the blackface disaster starting at the 45 second mark.

Viral Like SARS: Prison Dancer: The Interactive Web Musical

From the 8Asians Suggestion Box: “I’m Carmen, the co-creator/writer of Prison Dancer: The Interactive Web Musical. [...] Beyond being part of the ‘Filipino Youtube’ movement, Prison Dancer is a story inspired by Filipinos – created by Filipinos – and ACTED by Filipinos. Not to say this is exclusionist of any other Asians but as a former cast member of Miss Saigon (I’m Filipina), I can say I appreciate that we’re actually portraying ourselves this time! VIRAL LIKE SARS: Internet Meme Proposal

VIRAL LIKE SARS: Internet Meme Proposal

Take note, unoriginal-guys-thinking-of-organizing-flash-mob-proposals. This is how you combine viral pop culture with sappy milestones in your life. Timothy Tiah in Kuala Lumpur decided to take the jump and ask his girlfriend, Audrey, to be his wife. And the creative part is that the entire proposal was done through flash cards incorporating popular Internet memes, like the Y U NO guy and Lord of the Rings. The result? A sweet, endearing, funny, relevant (at least for [...] Continue »

NBC Outsourced Alum Creates “Un-Aired” Lowe’s Commercial from All-American Muslim

So what do you do if your recent prime-time NBC sitcom Outsourced has been cancelled? If you’re Parvesh Cheena, that’s easy – make the fake commercial that Lowe’s removed from the TLC reality show All-American Muslim after press from far-right sources with your buddy Rizwan Manji. (Watch it until the end for the comedic payoff, which made me lulz.)

VIRAL LIKE SARS: Adorable Taekwondo Fight

VIRAL LIKE SARS: Adorable Taekwondo Fight

Taekwondo: it’s the national sport of South Korea. It’s a favorite after school activity for little kids. Earning its black belt makes you feel invincible. It’s in the Olympics. It’s also one of the cutest videos that I’ve seen this week and it’s also probably how I’d fight someone in the alley (a.k.a. completely missing all my kicks). I once had to help out at a TKD tournament during college and was lucky enough to [...] Continue »

VIRAL LIKE SARS: CSUN Student Freaks Out In Library

Some say that 2011 is the year of the Tiger Mom but I’m beginning to believe that this is the year of Asian Americans in libraries. First we had the whole Alexandra Wallace debacle and then the whole Asians Sleeping In The Library tumblr and now this: an Asian American woman at CSUN “freaking out” in the library due to inconsiderate students during finals week. Also, the definition of “freaking out” has also been changed [...] Continue »

VIRAL LIKE SARS: Adorable Korean Kids Sing The Ramones

Want to feel really old? Check out the kindergarten class at the Sullivan School in Seoul, South Korea, where they sing their wee little hearts out with “Judy Is A Punk.” There’s also a video of them singing David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” and Bonnie Prince Billy’s version of R. Kelly’s  “The World’s Greatest” (because having little kids sing a straight up R. Kelly song would be a little inappropriate). I’m hoping a song from Watch [...] Continue »
