Asian American Commercial Watch: Parvesh Cheena Makes a Deal With the Pepto Bismol To Go Squirrel

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_b3ca5NTxzI

I’m not sure why Pepto Bismol decided to upload this holiday commercial to YouTube in the middle of summer, but I’m just grateful they did so that we can see Parvesh Cheena shaking the tiny hand(?) of a squirrel.

Merry July, or whatever.

“White Vengeance” Movie Review

White Vengeance” was directed by Hong Kong director and screenwriter Daniel Lee. The story is set after the fall of the Qin Dynasty around 200 BC, and two sworn brothers fight together and then against each other for rule over China. Of course, they are in love with the same woman, played by Yifei Liu from Jackie Chan and Jet Li’s first collaborative movie, The Forbidden Kingdom.

I picked this film out of my Netflix stream because I’m in the midst of writing book two of my teenage kung fu romance wuxia story, The Legend of Phoenix Mountain (aptly named The Return to Phoenix Mountain, hold the applause). I wanted some warring states action going on since I’m planning for some epic battles in my book, and this movie basically delivered exactly what I was looking for. It starts off kind of slow, somewhat like a Tolkien novel where it seems like a dense genealogical history lesson, but once you zero in on who the main characters are, everything comes together quite nicely, and you simply get immersed in the complexity of the multiple layers of conflict drowning all the characters. Recommended for audiences who enjoy Chinese history, war strategy movies, and lots of epic bloody battles. There is one part that will have you cradling your hand in tears. You have been warned.

Empire State of Mind Parodies – Beijing & Taiwan State of Mind

I recently saw these two video spoofs of JAY Z & Alicia Key’s “Empire State of Mind” with instead of New York City being a state of mind, Beijing and Taipei being a state of mind. I first saw the Beijing State of Mind spoof (which video and singing production quality is a bit higher than the Taiwan one IMHO) first, though the upload YouTube date is posted for July 9th, while I just saw the other day the “Taiwan State of Mind,” which has an upload date of July 5th, brought to you by the infamous Taiwanese animators Next Media Animation. Enjoy!

Cultural Blackmail: The Hipsterization of Asian America

HipsterGlasses

Very few things can get me to pop in while I’m still vagabonding and give even an inkling of attention for something in another universe. Unfortunately for you all, the recent article about being “hip” to be Asian-American, which coincides with this idea that’s been idling in my mind before I bowed out are what both compelled me to make a few statements before continuing back on the road.

So let me ask what is this nonsense about being Asian-American? With most of the popular media about Asian America circulating the grapevine, it has a very Southern California-centric mentality, and Southern California does not speak for all of Asian America. Not surprising, since SoCal is where some of the best departments for Asian-American Studies is at the university level, and most of the new media hacks are based there in that town where the archetypal person is an unholy amalgamation of Leona Helmsley’s personality, with the body (and self-righteous pretentiousness) of Ignatius J. Reilly trying to fit in a bikini that Kate Moss finds too loose, all screaming about their greatness in the voice of Gilbert Gottfried and Fran Drescher’s illegitimate lovechild.

Southern California does not represent Asian America, contrary to what YouTube and many of the opinions polluting popular and social media seemingly convey. True, a large number of the API community is found in California, but I cringe when more often than not, I come across people who are surprised there are large pockets of Asians back east and the Midwest (places I’ve lived in), and then assume that there is a gravity-like pull that inspires people to inevitably migrate out west.

Let’s look at the problem with the bad romance of 1) the hipsterization of culture, and 2) the commercialization of culture. Liberals are annoying, we know that. That self-righteous, moral blackmail that does nothing more than shock and shame those who do not agree or keep up with the futile race to see who can be most “open-minded”–and “open-minded” itself at times being a badge of pride in nothing as it loses meaning. To me, I go by a classic definition of being open-minded: being able to consider things without necessarily agreeing with them, the reasoning behind those perspectives, and appreciation; whereas this self-righteous liberal and bandwagon hipster mentality is to follow the trend of whatever seems “cool” at the moment and scorn whatever isn’t with copy-and-paste wit.

NTSB Intern Who Confirmed Fake Racist Asiana Airlines Pilot Names Sacked ; KTVU Being Sued by Asiana

NTSBintern_tweets

According to both NBC News and CNN (and many other media outlets), the NTSB intern who confirmed the fake racist Asiana Airlines pilot names to KTVU is no longer an intern at the NTSB.

As I had blogged earlier, KTVU did apologize, but from a follow-up NTSB statement, it is pretty clear that those fake racist names originated somehow at KTVU and KTVU has yet clarified exactly how those names got on air. Someone last Friday was pretty clever to register the Twitter handle, NTSBintern , and prophetically tweeted what happened to the actual NTSB summer intern.

In related news, Asiana Airlines is suing KTVU:

“Asiana spokesman Suh Kiwon told The Times on Monday that the airline was planning a defamation lawsuit against KTVU because the company felt that the station’s “mocking” report of the bogus pilot names damaged the Asiana’s reputation. “The derogatory report defamed Asiana and its pilots,” Suh said. “We made the determination that it caused great harm to our reputation.””

As many have noted and I would have to agree with, it’s the crash that is damaging the Asiana Airlines’ reputation, not KTVU’s broadcast error.

Video Showing Asian Women As Victims Of Sexual Violence By White Men Goes Viral

Courtesy: flickr/epSos .de

Courtesy: flickr/epSos .de

A video went viral in South Korea showing two western men harassing, insulting, and threatening a local woman. The video is only 78 seconds long, and it’s definitely one of the most disgusting, gruesome and horrified vidoes that I have seen. Due to its disgusting content, YouTube has taken it down [Editors Note: We tried to provide a link, but they keep getting taken down].

To compound the issue, comments and reactions to this video tend to focus on the victim, blaming her for getting herself into the situation for being in a club and getting involved with western men, indicating that she deserved to be treated like that because she is actively seeking white men.

According to the Washington Post, a Jagei.com commenter said “She went crazy over white guys, lived at a club, and ran into trouble.” Another wrote, “After that, I think she’s going to go clubbing to meet white guys again.”

As a woman grew up in Asia, sadly I am not surprised by how many Korean men, or Asian men, perceived issues like this. Women are often to blame for falling victims of sexual violence. It’s always her fault, either the way she dressed, the way she talked, the place she choosed to be in, the group of people she chooosed to be with. It’s all her fault. But is it really?

Asian American Urban Dance: Breaking Stereotypes, Entering American Mainstream Thought

Nothing says mainstream like a show on the Las Vegas strip, and the Jabbawockeez’s new show Prism that my family and I recently saw in Luxor is one sign that Asian Americans as hip-hop dancing has hit the mainstream.

This article from Voice of America News talks about how Asian Americans doing hip-hop (or urban as some say) dance is breaking Asian American stereotypes.  When I first saw the headline of the article, I thought, “What took so long?  It’s old news!”  On reading it in detail, I was pleasantly surprised that it had some history that I didn’t know, although I felt it definitely missed a few things.

KTVU Makes Full Apology for On Air Racist Joke in Evening Broadcast

http://youtu.be/mPNl2S30MF8

Obviously, with the racist joke amazingly aired without their recognition at noon on Friday, KTVU has been doing some massive damage control. The video broadcast clip has been going viral not only in the San Francisco Bay Area, but no doubt nationally. I was seeing the video, image or article posted or linked to on Facebook all Friday afternoon.

Going beyond KTVU’s initial tepid on air apology shortly afterwards as well as posted web apology,  I definitely wanted to see how KTVU tackled this issue during their 6:00 PM evening broadcast. You can take a look for yourself, but I felt that anchorman Frank Somerville made a deeply felt and sincere apology on behalf of KTVU. Clearly, I’m sure that Somerville and the rest of the KTVU staff are very embarrassed that this happened – and especially Tori Campbell, the anchorwoman who read the teleprompter of with those fake racist Asian names.

Obviously, the rush to be first and to get a scoop ahead of other news organizations can lead to disastrous result. Most notably that comes to my mind is CNN & Fox News erroneously reporting that the Supreme Court had struck down the individual mandate in Obamacare. Also, the names of the training pilot and the trainer pilot had already been reported a few days ago – Lee Kang Kuk and Lee Jung Min respectively. Given that the Asiana Airlines crash has been the number one local story this past week, it’s kind of shocking that the news staff didn’t recognized they were being conned.

What is still not clear to me is who came up with those names – someone within KTVU or the NTSB intern? From the NTSB statement, it was a little ambiguous. I find it hard to believe that someone within KTVU would have come up with such a prank since I have to imagine that such a person would know it would blow up in the station’s face? It’s much easier to believe that an immature college summer intern. I wonder when we’ll find out more info regarding the intern (if ever?). I wouldn’t be too surprised if his (or her) summer internship just ended…

NTSB States Erroneous (Racist) Crew Names Was Confirmed by Summer Intern

8A-2013-07-12-NTSB-PressRelease-ScreenshotIn the category of “summer interns who will not receive a job offer,” we have the one at the NTSB… the one who erroneously confirmed the racist pilot names to KTVU.

Here’s the NTSB Press Release:

National Transportation Safety Board

NTSB statement on erroneous confirmation of crew names

July 12, 2013

The National Transportation Safety Board apologizes for inaccurate and offensive names that were mistakenly confirmed as those of the pilots of Asiana flight 214, which crashed at San Francisco International Airport on July 6.

Earlier today, in response to an inquiry from a media outlet, a summer intern acted outside the scope of his authority when he erroneously confirmed the names of the flight crew on the aircraft.

The NTSB does not release or confirm the names of crewmembers or people involved in transportation accidents to the media. We work hard to ensure that only appropriate factual information regarding an investigation is released and deeply regret today’s incident.

Appropriate actions will be taken to ensure that such a serious error is not repeated.

Racist Joke: Asiana Airlines 214 Pilot Names Reported On-Air by SF Bay Area Local TV News KTVU

The crash of Asiana Airlines flight #214 last Saturday is no laughing matter. But someone else at the San Francisco Bay Area local television news broadcast KTVU thought otherwise – erroneously reporting that these four were the pilots:

  • Sum Ting Wong
  • Wi Tu Lo
  • Ho Lee Fuk
  • Bang Ding Ow

When I first read the names, I was like WTF? But when I saw the video, I was like, how did the new reporter or the person feeding the teleprompter not know the names were fake. This literally like something out of The Simpsons. I actually feel a little sorry for the news reporter, because she is clearly clueless that these names are *clearly* fake while reading the names of the pilot.

Later, KTVU issued an apology and stated that they received those names from the NTSB (which was false).

Anime Review: Okami-san and Her Seven Companions

What caught my attention first about this anime was the kitty boxing gloves. Immediately, I was like “I must have a pair of kitty boxing gloves like so!” They are too awesome. And they “meowed” when Okami, the main heroine, punches the bad guys. It also leaves a happy smiley kitty face mark on her opponents. Life doesn’t get much more awesome than that.
