CDC Study Suggests Low Cancer Screening Rates Among Asians in US

CDC Study Suggests Low Cancer Screening Rates Among Asians in US

20 years ago, Susan Matsuko Shinagawa’s surgeon told her that she didn’t need a biopsy, despite the fact that a sonogram had revealed the lump in her breast was a solid mass. Why? Because he thought that she was too young to have breast cancer, and because he was convinced that “Asian women don’t get breast cancer”. I’d never heard of this myth before, but maybe other APIAs have, because the CDC just came out [...] Continue »

Some Skin Whitening Creams Can Be Hazardous To Your Health

Colorism, the bias that whiter skin is better, manifests itself in sales of skin whitening creams.  This video from CNN shows how these creams are marketed to both male and female Indians.   Filipinos are also plagued with colorism and are also consumers of skin whitening creams.  I have always thought that colorism and skin whitening were damaging to the the psyches of people of color.  It turns out that some whitening creams can be physically [...] Continue »

Join Team Janet & Help Find A Bone Marrow Match For Janet Liang

Janet Liang is a recent UCLA graduate of Chinese descent. On August 24, 2009, she was diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukemia. In order to survive, she needs to find a bone marrow donor by April. The most likely match for a donor will be a Chinese American. The process of registering as a donor is easy, and testing if you are a match is a simple, painless cheek swab. There are several big names in the [...] Continue »

National Online March for Reproductive Justice, Rights and Health

National Online March for Reproductive Justice, Rights and Health

Dr. Sophia Yen is a big supporter of trusting woman to make their own health care decisions, and is launching a national online effort for Trust Women Week to drawn attention and support for reproductive justice, rights and health during the anniversary week of Roe v. Wade which made abortion legal. There has been a long concerted effort to slowly chip away the rights of women’s reproductive rights since Roe v. Wade. Recently, Congress passed [...] Continue »

Do Asians Have the Smallest Testicle?

Do Asians Have the Smallest Testicle?

My 8Asians New Years resolution was to “continue to look for body parts on Asian Americans that I can objectify.” A friend on Facebook commented that she didn’t think I could find another body part to write about (since I’ve already written about Asian vaginas, breasts, penises, and butts). But she gives me too little credit. There are lots more body parts I can still write about! Today, I want to discuss the male testicle. [...] Continue »

Defenseless Asian Teen Attacked By Seven Others

Defenseless Asian Teen Attacked By Seven Others

WARNING: Video above contains violent content and NSFW language. This past weekend, there was footage released of a newly immigrated Chinese teen getting assaulted by seven others in Chicago. Some of them were even Asian Americans. From the video, it shows that the seventeen year old teen did not provoke this fight at all and was defenseless. All of this was an act of bullying. The punching and kicking continued even after the boy had [...] Continue »

“Asian Glow” Increases Risk of Esophageal Cancer

“Asian Glow” Increases Risk of Esophageal Cancer

After consecutive months of holiday celebrations by getting wasted followed by nasty hangovers the next day…does this sound familiar to any of you? Had it ever cross your mind why your friends or you have Asian glow and others don’t? It’s been brought up before, but more recent studies have shown that having this red flush after drinking can increase risks of esophageal cancer. According to Philip J. Brooks from the Division of Metabolism and [...] Continue »

Asian Americans More Likely To Use Child Seats, Seat Belts On Children

A new study examining almost 40,000 auto accidents from 2002-2006, where children were injured, determined that Asian Americans were most likely to have their child restrained, either with a seat belt or child seat, with 59.3% of Asian American children involved in auto accidents actually having used restraints, compared with an overall rate of 47.5 percent of child accident patients who were restrained. Of black patients, 39.5 percent were restrained at the time of the [...] Continue »

Robin Lim Named CNN’s 2011 Hero Of The Year

Robin Lim Named CNN’s 2011 Hero Of The Year

Earlier this month CNN honored 10 people ranging from directors of non-profits that support military widows, urban youth, and people with disabilities. But, the story that captured my heart was about Robin Lim, or “Mother Robin,” who was the CNN Hero of the Year. Mother Robin, a Filipino-American, is a mid-wife and founder of free health clinics called Yayasan Bumi Sehat. These clinics offer prenatal care, birthing services, and other medical care for mothers-to-be in [...] Continue »

Korean-Canadian Virologist Develops HIV Vaccine Approved for Human Testing

Researchers from University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario developed an HIV vaccine that uses whole HIV virus, but it is engineered so that it cannot cause HIV in recipients. The vaccine has been shown to stimulate strong immune response during tests on lab animals. In addition, toxicology tests show that the vaccine induces no adverse effects. The SAV001 vaccine is developed by Dr. Chil-Yong Kang and his team over the last ten years. The [...] Continue »

Health Study Sees Rice as Source of Arsenic Exposure

Via US News: “New research finds that pregnant women in New Hampshire, which has high levels of arsenic in drinking water in some wells, may also be ingesting arsenic through rice…Karagas said arsenic levels in rice ‘should be monitored,’ although she added, ‘at this point, we’re not making any specific dietary or nutritional recommendations.’” It’s ok, you don’t need to panic, rice won’t give you arsenic poisoning.
